Title: The Shield and the Dove: The Dual Nature of Fatherhood

As Father's Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey of fatherhood and the profound impact it has had on my life. Being a father to eleven children has been both a privilege and a challenge, requiring me to embody the dual nature of strength and tenderness, protection, and comfort. Yet, amidst the joys and triumphs, I have faced what I consider to be the greatest test of my fatherhood: the loss of my beloved 14-year-old daughter, Spirit, to suicide.

Nine months ago, our family was shattered by the unbearable pain of Spirit's tragic passing. She was a radiant soul, full of life and hope, but the relentless torment of bullying and cyberbullying eroded her spirit, leading her into the depths of depression. The weight of this loss has tested the very core of my being as a father, challenging me to reconcile the roles of a shield and a dove.

A shield, traditionally seen as a symbol of protection, is a vital aspect of fatherhood. We fathers are tasked with shielding our children from harm, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual. We stand as guardians, willing to take a blow for them, to shield them from the arrows of the world. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, the enemy manages to strike a blow that pierces even the strongest defenses.

In the face of such devastating loss, it is natural to question our ability to protect our children. We may be haunted by the nagging thoughts of "What if I had done more? What if I had recognized the signs? Could I have shielded her from this torment?" These questions gnaw at our souls, threatening to undermine our sense of purpose as fathers.

Yet, it is in these darkest moments that the other aspect of fatherhood, the nature of a dove, reveals itself. A dove symbolizes peace, love, and tenderness. It embodies the comforting and nurturing qualities of a father, reminding us that even amidst the storm, we can provide solace and support for our children. We can be a refuge, a source of unwavering love and understanding.

When Spirit left us, I was faced with the immense responsibility of comforting my grieving family while grappling with my own grief. In the depths of my pain, I turned to my faith, seeking solace and guidance. Through Christ, I found the strength to be both a shield and a dove—a source of unwavering strength for my family while also providing them with the tender love and support they needed.

During my own grief, I discovered that the dual nature of fatherhood is not about striking a perfect balance between toughness and tenderness. It is about embracing the tension between the two, recognizing that our strength does not negate our ability to be tender, nor does our tenderness diminish our strength.

As fathers, we are called to be both strong and vulnerable, protectors and nurturers. We must be willing to fight the battles that our children cannot fight alone, and also extend a hand of compassion and understanding when they stumble and fall. We must encourage open communication, teach them resilience, and be their safe harbor in times of distress.

While I continue to grapple with the heart-wrenching loss of my daughter, I draw strength from the knowledge that her memory lives on within each of us. I strive to honor her legacy by being a shield against injustice, standing up against bullying, and creating a safe and loving environment for my remaining children. I am determined to advocate for mental health awareness and support, so that no other family has to endure the pain we have endured.

To all fathers out there, I encourage you to embrace the dual nature of your role with grace and humility. Be both.
