It's Never Too Late Get The Back To School “Supply” List

As you begin to start back to school there are some essential items that you must have for the first day of school. Whether you are in grade school or entering college, there is still a list of suggested items you must acquire in order to start right. Many students can make their way to Wal-Mart to find these items, such as: pencil, pens, notebooks and binders. However, the spiritual back to school supply items can’t be found of the shelves of Wal-Mart. These items are found only in the storage of God’s Word. Let’s look at a few items that you need to bring to class with you the first day according to God’s Word.

Item #1: Scheduler/Planner

Word: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will

give you everything you need” Matthew 6:33

It is easy to take your time with God for granted. After a long busy day of classes, test, and homework you will be exhausted. As you hit the pillow you remember you haven’t prayed or read your Word for the day. But instead of getting, you skip your time with God and tell yourself you will make it tomorrow.

Just like you can’t skip class and expect to pass, you can’t miss time with God and expect to maintain your spiritual growth. Make plans everyday to read and pray for least 15 minutes. One thing that helped me was to follow the calendar days of the months with the chapters of Proverbs. I would read a proverb a day. That helped me so much in my walk with God. Start making the time with God today so that you can continue to grow while in school.

Item #2: Pencil/Paper

Word: “Write the vision and make it plain…..that he may run that reads it” Habakkuk 2:2

With the start of a new year, comes new goals. Write down your goals for this school year. Do you want to make straight A’s? Have perfect attendance? Maybe make the dean’s list? Or maybe this is your graduating year? Whatever it may be, write it out and post it to your mirror. Look at it daily. So you remember where you want to be. This will help you in the times of discouragement when you feel like giving up. This will help you keep your focused on the main goal, even if there is a delay, doesn’t mean you are denied.

Item #3: Book bag

Word: “Give all of your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you” 1 Peter 5:7

As you try to make your way from class to class, it is a good idea to put your books in your book bag. Your book bag helps lighten the load so that your hands won’t be full. Sometimes in school you can begin to get overloaded. Between sports, band, academics, and a social life you can feel like you are stressed out. It is at that moment that you have to remember that there is no care or concern that you can’t take to God. School can be a very stressful time. Feeling the deadlines to turn in essays and finish assignments can be overwhelming. Don’t let the pressure get to you. Remember to be open and honest in your prayer to God. Tell him what you are worried about. Then let the peace of God rule in your heart.

In my book, Jesus Goes to College, I discuss the importance of finding where your faith fits in to your school work. There is a great value in receiving an education. Even Jesus understood that. In Luke 2, we find that Jesus has wonder off from his parents to join the teachers in the temple. The bible says that we when they found him he was sitting among teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. (Luke 2:46-47). Here is the son of God in school. Attending class. Not tardy. Not playing around, but taking his education seriously. As you approach this new school year ask yourself the same. Do I really take school seriously? Am I on task? Do I have all the right supplies to succeed?

Prayer for the upcoming school year:

Lord, I am so thankful for all of the opportunities you have given me. Thank you for allow me to be able to receive an education. Equip me with all of the right supplies to go back to school. Help me to take my education seriously this year if I didn’t before. Where I was failing let me succeed. Where I struggle, give me some help. Give me favor with my teachers. Help from the right classmates. Push me into my graduation and the plans you have for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
